Meet Lea Nyland, a fresh face in the Nordic fashion scene. The Danish/Norwegian designer has made an impressive collection named “Locomote”, which tries to interpret freedom, lightness and the opaqueness of not committing oneself. These lofty concepts come to life in a material as commonplace as denim. The poetic aesthetics of the actual clothes stands in complete contrast to the proletarian heritage of denim – as well as the physical qualities normally associated with denim as a material.
According to Lea Nylands own statement she: “would have thought denim to be more restrictive, but put together with tulle, fringes and pleats it suddenly seem to have some movement and ease in my eyes. The same applies to the silhouette of a bomber jacket – but made of crepe, beads and tulle, it becomes something else entirely. I have always been interested in contradictions and in this instance, it came together seamlessly.”
Social distinction and class hierarchy may not have disappeared, but it is expressed in ever changing ways. The days of tea gowns are over and in their place, is a lifestyle of self-determination, individual choice and a life in flow. To us, Lea Nyland is a designer that makes the new social elite come to life and we love it.
